Joe Allen has insisted that Liverpool were confident about bridging the gap with their title rivals following his side’s 4-3 win over Swansea City yesterday.

With the Premier League’s current top three, namely, Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester City playing and winning their respective matches on Saturday, the onus was on fourth-placed Liverpool to match their rivals’ results the following day.

Liverpool did manage to bag three points as well in a thrilling attacking contest at Anfield.

And Allen, who formerly played for the Swans, admitted that it was an “extremely tough” match against Garry Monk’s side.

However, the Welsh international explained that he was pleased after the Merseyside giants came out victorious from the close encounter.

"It was an extremely tough game, but we got the job done," Allen told his club’s official site.

"We got the three points and so I'm very happy with that.

"Swansea pushed us all the way to the final whistle and we had to be very resilient. We had to make sure that we gave everything in order to get the three points.

"When you play a day later than your rivals, you sometimes feel the pressure of that situation, but we were as confident as ever that we could get the result and bridge the gap."

Liverpool, who consolidated fourth-spot with the victory, will next face Southampton in an away game on Saturday.
