UEFA has confirmed that it is investigating 76 clubs for potential breaches of the organisation's Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules.

According to British broadcaster ITV, English Premier League giants Chelsea and Manchester City are thought to be amongst those 76 clubs being placed under the microscope.

All of the 76 clubs will now have their books looked at closely by the Club Financial Control Body to assess whether there have been breaches and whether they have continued. If that is the case, a decision will then be made on sanctions.

UEFA general secretary Gianni Infantino was quoted as saying: "This figure of 76 clubs is a high figure but it has to be looked at in the perspective of what the end figure will be."

UEFA has a range of powers at its disposal when sanctioning clubs for falling foul of FFP rules.

The harshest sanctions include barring clubs from competing in UEFA competitions, meaning an offending side could potentially miss out on the Champions League or Europa League.
