Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard believes his side are in the Premier League title race this season, but as underdogs.

The Reds defeated Southampton 3-0 at the weekend to surge up to second spot in the Premier League with 59 points from 28 games, just four points adrift of leaders Chelsea.

And with just 10 league games remaining in the season and Liverpool not competing in Europe, Gerrard feels the Merseyside club are in the race for the Premier League crown.

However, the England international, who insists that his side have a long way to go to clinch the title, wants Liverpool to fully focus on their remaining fixtures in the present campaign.

"We are in the race, we have no other distractions and we believe we can compete for it, but there is still a long way to go”, he was quoted as saying by his club’s official site.

“We've got some really important and difficult games coming up and we need to be focused.

"There are other big teams fighting for the title and I wouldn't say we are the favourites. In fact we are the underdogs.

"But confidence is high and with 10 games to go we're in a great position. We have given ourselves a chance."

Liverpool are next up against champions Manchester United at Old Trafford on 16th March.

Brendan Rodgers’ side will also have to play the likes of Manchester City, Chelsea and Tottenham during the final run-in of the season.
