Former Rangers’ skipper David Weir believes that the Glaswegian club do not get the credit that they deserve for climbing through the leagues.

Ally McCoist’s men beat Airdrie 3-0 at Ibrox on Wednesday and won the Scottish League One title with eight games still remaining in the campaign.

"There are no easy leagues to win. Even winning the leagues they're in now takes a bit of doing”, Weir told the BBC.

"Perhaps Rangers haven't had the credit they deserve for that."

Weir, who joined the Scottish club in 2007 when he left Everton, was all praise for Gers’ captain Lee McCulloch whose hat-trick against the Diamonds saw the Light Blues being promoted to the Scottish Championship.

"Lee McCulloch was there playing in the Champions League games, then all of a sudden, he's playing in the bottom tier of the Scottish League", said the former centre-back.

"So, it seemed like a long way back for a lot of players and Lee was one who stuck there. Now he can see light at the end of the tunnel.

"That's great for him and the club.”

Weir won three league titles, two Scottish Cups and three League Cups during his time with Rangers and is confident that the club he supported as a child will once again return to the top flight of Scottish football.
