Former Leeds United and Liverpool star Harry Kewell has announced his retirement from professional football, giving up his dream of playing for Australia in this summer's World Cup.

Now 35 years old, Kewell has been turning out in his native Australia for Melbourne Heart, having made 14 appearances with two goals this season, seeing his campaign disrupted by injury.

Injuries persistently dogged Kewell throughout his career, disrupting what should have been his proudest moment in the game with Liverpool in the 2005 Champions League final, a match he was forced off from in the 23rd minute.

Kewell plans to play his last match on 12th April when Melbourne Heart take on Western Sydney Wanderers.

The winger-cum-forward believes it was time to call it a day, even though his World Cup dream is now over.

"For the World Cup I can sit back and enjoy it", Kewell told the Sydney Morning Herald.

"There's obviously going to be questions asked about the World Cup but I haven't been part of the Australian squad for a while.

"For me it was time to step aside and let young players stand up."
