Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard has saluted his side's 2-1 win over Sunderland at Anfield this evening, but insisted they must learn lessons from a nervy finish.

Gerrard put Liverpool ahead by striking home a breathtaking free-kick in the 39th minute, sending the Reds in 1-0 ahead at the break.

Liverpool wasted little time in adding to their advantage after the restart, as Daniel Sturridge curled home a superb shot, finishing with aplomb.

But Sunderland started to come back into the game and deservedly scored through Ki Sung-Yueng in the 76th minute.

That made for some nervy minutes at the end and a lesson Gerrard feels must be learned.

"You have to give credit to Sunderland, they have come to make it difficult for us, they were difficult to break down", Gerrard explained to Sky Sports.

"We need to learn that when we go two goals ahead we can't concede. We need to hold on and pass it better."

The win sends Liverpool up to second in the Premier League, just one point behind league leaders Chelsea.
