Bayer Leverkusen sporting director Rudi Voller claims that the club will back under-fire coach Sami Hyypia, despite speculation the Finn could be sacked if the side lose to Hamburg at the weekend.

Leverkusen have won just three of their last 16 games under Hyypia, losing eleven, and are now at serious risk of being overhauled by Wolfsburg in fourth in the Bundesliga, the final Champions League qualification spot.

But Voller claims that Leverkusen are not about to wield the axe on the Liverpool legend and insists Hyypia is a fighter.

"If we had the feeling that it did not work anymore, we would act", Voller explained to the Kolner Stadt-Anzeiger.

"But we don't have this feeling, Sami is a fighter.

"Sami Hyypia is going through a learning process.

"As a coach he has only known the sunny side of the job. He has never had to deal with a crisis. So of course in the current situation he lacks some experience.

"But he is a hard worker, just as he was as a player. Therefore we believe in him."
