Johan Djourou will remain at Hamburg until 2016 after the Bundesliga side activated a purchase option to sign the defender from Arsenal.

The Switzerland international has been on a season-long loan with Hamburg from the Gunners and, despite the struggles the northern German outfit have endured this term, is staying put.

According to the Hamburger Morgenpost, Hamburg are paying Arsenal a fee of €2.5m to snap up Djourou.

Djourou has made a total of 20 appearances in the Bundesliga so far this season for Hamburg, along with two appearances in the German Cup.

The 27-year-old's contract with Arsenal had been due to run until the summer of 2015.

Djourou joined Arsenal in 2002, making his senior debut for the club in 2004 against Everton.

He has won 43 caps at international level for Switzerland.
