Liverpool legend Ronnie Whelan has written off Arsenal and Chelsea when it comes to winning the Premier League title this season.

The former Irish midfielder's old club sit on top of the table at present, two points clear of second-placed Chelsea, who suffered a shock defeat at relegation battlers Crystal Palace last weekend.

Manchester City sit third, four points behind Liverpool, but have two games in hand on those teams above them. Meanwhile, Arsene Wenger's Arsenal are fourth and seven points behind Liverpool.

Whelan thinks that points wise, Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester City are the contenders. But when throwing current form into the mix he has written off Jose Mourinho's men.

"I think there's only three now, Chelsea, City and Liverpool", he told LFC TV.

"I watched Chelsea the other night [3-1 loss to Paris Saint-Germain, ed.], I was at the game.

"When you watch Liverpool, they're full of energy, vigour, they want to get at people. Chelsea seem to have lost that; against Palace they didn't do it, against Paris Saint-Germain they didn't do it. So they look to be waning a little bit, Chelsea.

"I don't want to tempt fate, but you've got to go between City and Liverpool now."

Whelan picked up six top flight titles during his lengthy stay at Anfield, also collecting three FA Cups, three League Cups and one European Cup, amid numerous other accolades.
