But Bayern Munich were not behind for long, scoring just 22 seconds later when Mario Madzukic stooped to head the ball home.

Further goals from Thomas Muller (68th minute) and Robben himself (76th minute) put Manchester United to the sword and sent Bayern Munich through to the Champions League semi-finals.

And for Robben, Manchester United's goal shook Bayern Munich into life.

"I mean they scored the first goal, so it was a tricky tie, but of course 3-1 is a good result", Robben told Sky Sports.

"I think what was very important was that we scored straight after the 1-0. It looked like it was a wake-up call.

"I think the first ten minutes in the second half were a disaster, we were so slow and you can't do that in the Champions League.

"It was a wake-up call because after that we scored three goals."
