Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher believes that Red Devils have proven their detractors wrong with their performance over the two legs of their Champions League quarter-final tie against Bayern Munich, even though they failed to go through to the semi-finals.

Manchester United suffered a 3-1 defeat at Bayern Munich’s hands even though they took the lead in the second half from a Patrice Evra strike. Bayern equalised within 22 seconds from a Mario Mandzukic header and two more goals from Thomas Muller and Arjen Robben killed the tie.

Fletcher, who started yesterday against the Bavarians, believes that the Red Devils proved their qualities on the big stage again and the margins of their defeat were very minute.

"People were saying we’re miles off [Bayern’s level] but I don’t think we are. It's small margins in big games and you’ve seen that tonight”, the Scot told the club’s official site.

The 30-year-old stated that the 20-time English champions showed enough quality and determination over the two legs to prove their naysayers wrong and believes that they can compete at the highest level with the top teams in Europe.

"They’re the defending champions but we’ve got a lot of quality in our squad and we showed at times over the two legs that we can play at this level and compete."

The 1995/96 season was the last time when Manchester United didn’t compete in the Champions League. They were knocked out in the second round of the UEFA Cup by the Russian club Rotor Volgograd.
