Argentina coach Alejandro Sabella has explained that star striker Lionel Messi is ‘irreplaceable’ and will be the key to their World Cup hopes in Brazil this summer.

The two-time world champions will be looking to end their 21-year long wait for a major international trophy when they kickstart their campaign with a game against Bosnia and Herzegovina at the Maracana on 15th June.

Besides the Bosnians, the South American side have been drawn up against Iran and Nigeria, and Sabella, who took over the reins of the national side in 2011, feels Messi is unparalleled and invaluable to the White and Sky Blues.

“We’ve played a few games without Leo, but the fact is that he’s irreplaceable”, he said in an interview with FIFA’s official site.

“There’s not a club or national team in the world that could play the same with or without Messi.

“We rely on him so much that when he’s not there, we notice it”, the 59-year-old added.

Messi has featured in 83 games for Argentina and has scored on 37 occasions, and was the second top scorer in the South American section with ten strikes to his name during the qualifiers.
