Aston Villa have suspended the club's assistant manager Ian Culverhouse and head of football operations Gary Karsa, pending an internal investigation.

The Premier League side have not revealed what the duo are being investigated for, but have promoted Gordon Cowans and Shay Given to assist boss Paul Lambert.

The duo have been temporarily promoted pending the outcome of the inquiry concerning Culverhouse and Karsa.

Lambert has welcomed the extra help from Cowans and Given, telling his club's site: "I'm delighted to have Gordon and Shay to assist me in preparing the team for Saturday which is what the whole group is focussed on".

On the pitch Aston Villa have lost their last four Premier League games and now see themselves sitting just four points above the drop zone.

They have four fixtures left, with games against Southampton (home), Swansea (away), Hull (home) and Manchester City (away).
