Borussia Dortmund have scored a coup by persuading Ilkay Gundogan to sign a new contract.

Gundogan, who has been repeatedly linked with Manchester United and Real Madrid, had been due to see his deal with Jurgen Klopp's men expire in 2015.

Dortmund had been working hard to persuade the Germany midfielder to renew, but talks had dragged on while Gundogan suffered from a back injury.

Now he has signed a one-year extension.

"I am very grateful that my club have given me the opportunity to continue to be part of this special team and this special environment", Gundogan told the club site.

"I will do everything to help my team-mates again soon and I am very optimistic about the coming weeks and months."

And sporting director Michael Zorc said: "We are very pleased with deal against the backdrop of a special injury-related situation and hope that Ilkay can contribute his full potential in the coming season for BVB."
