Lukas Podolski has stressed how vital it was that Arsenal switched on to the Premier League after beating West Ham 3-1 at the Emirates Stadium this evening.

The Gunners, returning to action after beating Wigan Athletic in the FA Cup semi-final on Saturday, fell behind against West Ham, who took the lead in the 40th minute through Matt Jarvis.

Podolski though ensured Arsenal would not go in at half time behind when he struck in the 44th minute.

Olivier Giroud then scored in the 55th minute before Podolski bagged another in the 78th minute, sealing three vital points for Arsenal which have sent them back up above Everton and into fourth spot.

"After the FA Cup it was important we switch on to the Premier League", Podolski told Sky Sports.

"We were fifth so we must fight for the fourth place as we want to play in the Champions League next year.

"We must go from game to game. Today was the first step."

Everton can leapfrog back above Arsenal if they can defeat Crystal Palace tomorrow, while the Gunners are next in action against Hull on Sunday.
