Manchester United’s Under-21 manager Warren Joyce is pleased with the performance of his side and feels that the young team have exceeded his expectations this season.

With just two more games to go for the club in their 21-match league programme this year, the team will take on Norwich City at Old Trafford on Thursday and a win tomorrow will put them above Fulham and Southampton, who have both finished their campaigns.

Starting next year, the league will split into two, with the first ten teams forming the First Division and the Red Devils, currently sixth in the table, are safe to go through, while clubs like Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal will have to struggle to make it to the top half.

The young team had a hard time on the field in their last game against Spurs on Monday, but were successful in pulling off a 1-0 win at White Hart Lane and Joyce is hopeful his side can continue their performance in the remaining games.

“At this stage of the season now, a lot of clubs are fighting to finish in the top half”, the boss told MUTV.

"If you look at the fixtures, a lot of people are bringing lads back from loans just to try to fight do that.

"We really wanted a settled group to work, develop and teach them things and we now have a youngish squad who should be playing around about this level. I'm sorry to see the season coming to an end because I think there has been a big improvement in the boys”, the 49-year-old continued.

"The main objective was to keep in the top half and play in the First Division next year but we've done better than expected really and have just got to keep going now."

The team will play their last league game against Reading at the Madejski Stadium on 24th April, which will mark the end of the regular league season.
