England Under-21 coach Gareth Southgate is keen to hand Liverpool defender Jon Flanagan an international call-up, if the full-back isn't included in Roy Hodgson's World Cup squad.

Flanagan has won plaudits for his performances in a Liverpool side fighting for the Premier League title this term, but international recognition has not been forthcoming, much to Reds boss Brendan Rodgers' surprise.

That is quickly set to change though, with Southgate confirming the defender is very much on the international radar.

The England Under-21 coach was quoted as saying by ITV: "I went to see Jon and Brendan at Liverpool about a month ago, because I feel he does deserve to be in our squad.

"He’s one we’ll be looking to involve in the summer, if of course he doesn’t force his way into the seniors."

Flanagan has risen to the occasion for Liverpool in the absence of injured left-back Jose Enrique.

He turned in another competent performance on Sunday as Liverpool put Manchester City to the sword 3-2 at Anfield to strengthen their grip on the top of the Premier League.
