Former Argentina and Barcelona coach Cesar Luis Menotti believes that Lionel Messi’s recent performances on the pitch are more due to mental fatigue than physical exhaustion.

Messi has already made 40 appearances for the club this season and with him being the lynchpin of the Argentina squad set to travel to Brazil for the World Cup this summer, Menotti believes Messi needs to spend a few days away from the game to recharge his batteries.

"Messi needs to forget the disappointment of his lesser performances and recover his pleasure, pride and passion for the game", the 75-year-old told Spanish daily AS.

Menotti thinks that Messi is suffering from mental fatigue due to continuous back-to-back games and the commitments that he is expected to fulfil in the modern era.

"As I can see he is suffering from more mental than physical fatigue. This is normal when there are so many games and you have so many commitments.

“A few days rest away from football would help him to clear his head and again be at his best. He needs some peace."

Menotti was the coach of the Argentina team that won the 1978 World Cup on home soil.
