Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has praised striker Olivier Giroud after the Frenchman scored during his side’s 3-1 win over West Ham United last night.

The Gunners’ front-man was guilty of a terrible miss just 30 minutes into the game, but made up for it with a right-footed shot off a Thomas Vermaelen assist in the second half.

The 27-year-old has been in the news for all the wrong reasons lately and rumours off a possible summer exit from the Emirates Stadium club have been doing the rounds. The player was made to sit out of Arsenal’s starting eleven against Wigan Athletic in the FA Cup semi-final, but was later brought on as a substitute in the 68th minute.

With 14 goals in 32 league appearances this season, Giroud is the club’s leading goalscorer and Wenger is hopeful that the latest strike will give him the confidence to end the season on a high.

"I think he started [the season] very strong and then went through a difficult patch", the French manager was quoted as saying by the club’s official site.

"Now he looks refreshed and I am pleased that he's back to his level. The goal he scored tonight will certainly give him the confidence that he needs.

"Overall I like his mentality and I like his spirit. He has great charisma as a player and I'm sure he will finish the season well", the 64-year-old added.

Arsenal, by virtue of the win, are back in the top four of the Premier League and will be hoping to maintain their position in order to qualify for the Champions League next year.
