Barcelona midfielder Andres Iniesta is disappointed after his side lost the final of the Copa del Rey 2-1 to rivals Real Madrid at the Mestella on Wednesday.

An 11th minute goal from Angel di Maria put Carlo Ancelotti’s side in the lead, but a header from centre-back Marc Bartra equalised for the Catalans. The game looked to be heading towards extra-time before Gareth Bale came running down the wing to put the ball past Jose Manuel Pinto in the 85th minute as Real Madrid lifted the Spanish Cup for the 19th time.

Barcelona were knocked out of the Champions League last week by losing to Atletico Madrid in the quarter-finals, and missed out on another trophy yesterday.

La Liga’s defending champions are currently third in the league table, four points behind the leaders as they look at the possibility of ending the season without a major title and Iniesta is disappointed with the way things have unfolded.

“It’s a shame. We have to be thankful to the fans, they were with us all the way through to the end”, the Spanish international was quoted as saying by the club’s official site.

“We’re coming off of a week in which we’ve been eliminated from two competitions. We tried until the end and details make a difference”, the 29-year-old continued.

“We’re leaving here disappointed that we didn’t win the title. You try to have the initiative in the game but Real Madrid are very decisive when they counter-attack. We have to find strength to fight for La Liga.

Barcelona will be hoping to give their fans something to cherish when they host Athletic Bilbao and travel to Villarreal over the coming weeks.
