Tottenham Hotspur boss Tim Sherwood feels that if Gareth Bale had stayed at White Hart Lane this season then the club would be challenging for the Premier League title.

Spurs cashed in on Bale last summer, selling the Welshman to Real Madrid for a world-record fee of around €100m.

The north London side reinvested much of the fee, spending over £100m on new players, but have struggled to improve their fortunes in the Premier League and are again poised to miss out on a top four spot.

Sherwood feels though that were Bale still present, things would be very different.

"He scored the winner in eight of our games last season", Sherwood was quoted as saying by the BBC.

"If we'd had that this season we'd be challenging for the title", he added.

Bale scored the winner for Real Madrid last night against Barcelona in the Copa del Rey final in Valencia.
