Napoli have not given up hope of signing Thomas Vermaelen from Arsenal and will redouble their efforts when the transfer window opens again this summer.

The Serie A side had been keen on signing the Belgian in January, but Arsenal did not want to lose Vermaelen midway through the campaign.

However, with the defender still firmly a backup option when Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny are fully fit, Napoli believe he may be open to a switch.

And so the Italians will move for Vermaelen when the window opens again, according to Tuttosport.

Vermaelen's contract at Arsenal expires in 2015 and the defender recently admitted he cannot say whether he will pen an extension.

"I don't know", he said last month when asked if he will sign a new deal at Arsenal, putting off thoughts on that front until the end of the season.

Vermaelen may also attract other suitors if he impresses at the World Cup with Belgium.
