Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard has signed a two-year contract extension which will keep him at the club until the end of the 2017/18 campaign.

Howard initially joined Everton on loan from Manchester United in 2006 and deal was made permanent for a transfer fee of £3m in early 2007.

Toffees manager Roberto Martinez has expressed his delight at Howard signing a contract extension.

“It is fantastic news”, Martinez told the club’s official TV channel. “To have Tim Howard performing as he has been this season, I cannot see past him to choose the best goalkeeper in the league.”

Martinez is happy that the 35-year-old has committed his long term future to the club before the World Cup, where Howard is expected to be the first-choice keeper for the USA and praised the American’s leadership qualities on and off the pitch.

“For him, in such an important year with the World Cup around the corner, to commit his future for the long term is an incredible moment for the dressing room.

“On top of his goalkeeping it’s his overall demeanour and personality in the dressing room. He is a strong leader.”

Howard set a Premier League record when he kept 16 clean sheets for Everton in the 2008/09 campaign.
