Roberto Martinez is pleased with how Everton adapted to a different type of game against Manchester United at Goodison Park today, as they ran out 2-0 winners over David Moyes' men.

Manchester United controlled possession during the game, enjoying 62 per cent to Everton's 38 per cent. But the Red Devils could not carve the Blues open, with Martinez's side playing a more direct brand of football and cutting the visitors open with slick counter-attacks.

It was a different style to that the Toffees usually play under Martinez, which centres around having a lot of the ball.

And the Everton manager was pleased with his side's adaptation.

"Sometimes you need to adapt to what you need to face on the pitch", the Spaniard told Sky Sports.

"I thought the way the game was going today, that suited us. I think it was more the fact that the amount of quality United had on the pitch, it looked a game we had to be very solid and well organised in and use the dynamic football that we have."

Martinez also praised Everton's focus throughout the contest.

"I think it was the focus and concentration more than anything. We knew we were facing a very good side, away from home they have an excellent record.

"We controlled the aspects of the game we wanted to do. I thought we were electrifying on the counter-attack."
