Everton were keen to beat Manchester United today upon David Moyes' return "for the fans", Leighton Baines has explained.

The Toffees knew they need to respond in the battle to finish fourth with Arsenal having beaten Hull City 3-0 just hours beforehand.

And the return of Moyes to his old club added further spice to the fixture.

Everton took the lead when Baines thrashed home a penalty in the 28th minute, before Kevin Mirallas ensured that they would head in 2-0 up at the break, cutting inside and firing the ball home.

2-0 was how it finished and Everton's fans relished their team beating Moyes' new side.

Asked whether wanting to beat Moyes' men had been a factor, Baines told Sky Sports: "It means a lot for the fans and the victory is for them.

"We let them down in midweek [against Crystal Palace]. We wanted to respond, to show we've got that grit."

Everton have now closed the gap on fourth-placed Arsenal to a single point.
