Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard feels the club’ fans were wrong to mock former manager David Moyes when he made his return to Goodison Park with Manchester United for their game on Sunday.

The Scottish manager joined the Red Devils in 2013 from Everton after serving 11 years at the helm of the Blues, but was booed on returning to Merseyside even though his side lost 2-0 to the hosts.

Moyes had received a warm send-off in his last game as Toffees’ boss last season, but his attempts to sign Leighton Baines and Marouane Fellaini cheaply last summer were considered ‘insulting’ by the club and did not sit well with the supporters.

However, Howard said that Moyes had laid an important foundation for the club’s present run of success, and felt that the fans were unfair to him.

"We have brilliant fans, but that was unfair on him”, the American shot-stopper, who was himself brought to Everton by Moyes in 2006, was quoted as saying by the BBC.

"He was the second coming, the messiah 12 months ago, and I don't think as Evertonians we should forget that.

"I love David Moyes. I think he is a brilliant manager”, the 35-year-old continued.

"He was [a brilliant manager] here for us and I will be forever grateful to him.”

Moyes has had a miserable season with Manchester United so far, as the defending champions are currently seventh in the Premier League, six points behind sixth-placed Tottenham, Hotspur and are struggling for a spot in the Europa League next year.
