Former Manchester United defender Arthur Albiston has asked the players in the Red Devils squad to take a long look hard at themselves and the role that they played in David Moyes’ sacking this morning.

Albiston admits that it was always going to be difficult for anyone who took over the reins from Sir Alex Ferguson, but believes that the players need to be accountable for their performances this season that led to Moyes being sacked.

"It is difficult following someone like Sir Alex Ferguson, who was so successful for over 25 years, but the players have got to look at themselves", the Scot told BBC Radio 5 live.

"They needed to stand up and be counted and they have fallen well below their standards. There are only two or three players who can say they have played up to standard.”

The 56-year-old said that he knows how it feels as a player when the manager is sacked because of the team’s performance on the pitch.

"I'm sure the players will feel bad and be looking at themselves. Two managers – Tommy Docherty and Ron Atkinson – were sacked while I was at Old Trafford and I felt terrible.

“I was part of the reason why they got sacked because the team I was in didn't play well enough. They will all be feeling bad – it is not nice when someone loses their job."

Moyes was sacked by Manchester United this morning after only serving around ten months of his six-year contract with the club.
