Former Liverpool manager Gerard Houllier is of the opinion that the Reds deserve to win the Premier League title this season.

The Merseyside club, who defeated Norwich City 3-2 on Sunday, are currently five points clear at the top of the league table with 80 points from 35 games.

Liverpool need seven points from their remaining three fixtures to be crowned the champions of England for the first time in 24 years.

And Houllier, who managed the Anfield club for six years between 1998 and 2004, feels his former side fully deserve to lift their maiden Premier League trophy because of their “modern” style of football.

"I gave an interview to a newspaper about three months ago and I said Liverpool could be the champions", the Frenchman told Liverpool’s official site.

"They are my favourites, because I looked at the fixtures and the way they play.

“Their football is outstanding – very modern, with a lot of pace and power going forward, and moving in the right areas with players with intelligence in their movement.

"I saw that two or three months ago; I said they could go right to the end and probably win it. I'm pleased that they are now three games away from that and, to be fair, they deserve it."

Liverpool will be looking for their 12th consecutive Premier League win when they take on second-placed Chelsea at Anfield on Sunday.
