Everton midfielder James McCarthy has insisted that his side will continue to apply pressure on Arsenal in view of pipping the Gunners in the race for the fourth spot.

The Toffees, who saw off defending champions Manchester United 2-0 at the weekend, are currently fifth in the Premier League table with 69 points from 35 games, just a point behind fourth-placed Arsenal.

And with three rounds of league matches still left to be played this season, McCarthy is hopeful about Everton grabbing the fourth and final Champions League spot.

“We wanted to get three points on the board [against Manchester United] and try to keep the pressure on Arsenal”, he told Everton’s official site.

“I think there's still plenty of twists and turns to come and you never know. We'll look after ourselves and see what it brings at the end of the season.”

However, Everton need just a solitary point against Southampton this weekend to book their place in the Europa League next season.

But McCarthy called on his side to bag the full three points against the Saints to keep the pressure on Arsenal.

“It [needing one point for Europe] is a big incentive and we'll give it our best shot”, he continued.

“We want to get three points on the board and keep up the pressure on Arsenal. We want to try to get European football back at Goodison.”
