Liverpool managing director Ian Ayre has revealed that the club are planning to spend heavily in the next transfer window.

The Reds, who are currently five points clear at the top of the Premier League table, cannot finish below the third spot this season after beating Norwich City 3-2 at the weekend.

As a result, the Merseyside club booked their place in the group stages of next season’s Champions League.

And Ayre, who admitted that Liverpool will need a better squad next term as they will be competing on both the domestic and European front, explained that the club will be doing their best to rope in manager Brendan Rodgers' targets.

"There is no question we always expected that the squad we need for next season will be very different to the squad that we have needed for this year when we were not playing in Europe", he was quoted as saying by FIFA’s official site.

"It will cost what it costs when we decide who the manager wants to buy. That has always been on the cards. It is fairly obvious that we set out with an ambition to get into the Champions League.”

Ayre further added that Liverpool will be able to attract top-notch players next season after qualifying for the Champions League, as the managing director recalled the incident of how the club’s star player Luis Suarez wanted to quit the Anfield outfit in search of Champions League football last summer.

"It has always been tougher in the transfer market when you are not competing at the highest level. We had the issue with Luis last summer because he wanted to play in the best games against the best players.

“That is always a factor. We have always been fortunate to be able to bring great players here despite that but there is no question it opens up a few doors for us and makes it a little bit easier."
