Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has hailed his side’s character in their goalless draw with Atletico Madrid in the Champions League semi-final first leg last night.

The contest at the Vicente Calderon was a tight affair, but the Blues, who lost Petr Cech and John Terry to injuries, did well to restrict the Spanish club from finding the back of the net.

And Mourinho explained that he was extremely pleased with the overall performance of Chelsea against the current La Liga leaders.

“Everybody did a great job”, the manager told his club’s official site.

“A tired David Luiz, after playing in midfield, stepped back and played in central defence for the last 20-25 minutes, which wasn't easy.

“For Ashley [Cole] to play this type of game after so many games not playing was amazing. [John Obi] Mikel, [Frank] Lampard and [Fernando] Torres were immense.

“Every player gave everything and I'm obviously very pleased.”

Chelsea, who are currently second in the Premier League table with 75 points from 35 games, will next play leaders Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday before locking horns with Atletico Madrid for the second leg at Stamford Bridge three days later.
