Everton assistant boss Graeme Jones believes that the Toffees can gain an important psychological advantage over Arsenal this coming weekend.

The Toffees are currently placed fifth in the league with 69 points, trailing Champions League contenders Arsenal by one point.

Earlier last week Roberto Martinez's men saw themselves slip from the fourth spot after a loss against Crystal Palace.

Everton play Southampton on Saturday, with their Champions League qualification rivals Arsenal set to wait until Monday to play against Newcastle United.

Jones believes that a win can provide Everton with a psychological advantage as they will have the chance to re-establish themselves in the top four before Arsenal play.

"It can be huge", the 44-year-old told his club's official site.

"The psychological side is as big as any game. It's everything,"

Referring to Sunday's match against Manchester United, Jones explained that such situations can be difficult as they have to wait for two days to watch all the results to come and then go out to perform.

"On Sunday it was difficult because it was only Manchester City who played later than us.

"You watch all the results come in over two days and then you have to go out and perform", Jones added.
