Liverpool defender Mamadou Sakho has revealed that boxing sessions help him keep fit and prepare better for games.

The French defender has played 16 matches in the league this season, having scored one goal. And Sakho is determined to ensure he is fully fit to take advantage of any other opportunities which come his way.

The 24-year-old adds that he has taken up boxing as a personal hobby, but doesn't actually fight.

"I'm someone who likes to do physical work outside of my day-to-day training", Sakho told his club's official site.

"I like boxing as a sport and, yes, I like to do boxing-based training as a way of varying my cardiovascular exercise a little – but I don't actually fight I have to tell you!"

The French international, who joined the Reds last year from Paris Saint-Germain, insists that his interests remain concentrated on football and boxing helps him to keep fit for it.

"I know my job is a footballer and I want to be fit for that.

"This just allows me to exercise in a slightly different way. You could say that I like to let off steam on the punch bag.

"It's part of that 'invisible' work that benefits me on an individual level", Sakho added.
