Liverpool managing director Ian Ayre is thrilled after the Reds booked their place in the group stages of the Champions League next season.

The Merseyside giants defeated Norwich City 3-2 on Sunday to move five points clear at the top of the Premier League table with 80 points from 35 games.

And with just three league games remaining in the season, Liverpool cannot finish below third place, which is the final automatic Champions League qualification spot.

Ayre has branded it as an “unbelievable achievement” for the Anfield club, who finished in a disappointing seventh position last term.

However, the managing director now wants Liverpool to push on as the Reds aim to become the champions of England for the first time in 24 years.

"What we achieved on Sunday was massive", Ayre explained to FIFA’s official site.

"This isn't just about getting in the qualifiers. We are guaranteed Champions League football.

“It is an unbelievable achievement from where we were. It is what we set out for but if you were taking bets at the start of the season, you'd have said fourth place would be a great achievement.

“Now we are guaranteed third and we are determined to push on."

Liverpool are next up against second-placed Chelsea at Anfield on Sunday.
