Arjen Robben has explained that he was not displeased with Bayern Munich’s performance in their 1-0 loss to Real Madrid in the Champions League semi-final first leg last night.

The Bavarians enjoyed long spells of possession at the Santiago Bernabeu, but the Spanish giants scored the all important goal through Karim Benzema from a swift counter-attacking move in the 19th minute.

Despite the loss, Robben feels Bayern Munich dominated proceedings against Real Madrid as the Dutchman believes his side stepped up their level for the game.

However, the 30-year-old, who feels his side are still in the tie, was disappointed in the manner in which Bayern Munich conceded the goal.

“I think we played well, especially considering the last two or three weeks [of Bundesliga form]”, he explained to UEFA’s official site.

“We stepped up our level and controlled the match, especially in the first half when I expected a little bit more from Madrid. They stayed back a lot and defended. The only thing missing for us tonight was a goal.

“It's a shame we didn't score but we will go into the return match with a lot of confidence. Madrid are so dangerous up front so we will have to be wary in Munich.

“If you lose the ball too easily they break away and they can score with ease. You could see that with their goal tonight, we lost possession and after two or three passes the ball was in the back of the net.

“I can’t say we are happy that we lost but it's not such a bad feeling as we are still in it.”

Bayern Munich will welcome Real Madrid to the Allianz Arena for the all important return leg on Tuesday.
