Spanish full-back Nacho Monreal has admitted that his country have to fight hard to defend their World Cup title.

La Roja are in the Group B of the competition along with 2010 World Cup runners-up the Netherlands, Chile and Australia.

Even if Vicente del Bosque’s side manage to go through to the Round of 16 of the tournament, a potential meeting with hosts and favourites Brazil looms large.

However Monreal, who is aware that Spain have a tough job in hand in view of defending their crown, explained that his nation will give their all in every game in the World Cup.

“Holland and Chile are very good sides, so it’s going to be hard, very hard”, the Arsenal defender told his club’s official site.

“We’re world champions and European champions of course, we’ve got a good side and we know that we’re going to have to fight to defend our title.

“We’re going to have to grit our teeth to go through, give 100 per cent in every game but anything is possible really.”

Monreal, who has 16 senior caps for Spain to his name, has also represented the nation at Under-21 level.
