Gus Poyet is carefully considering his future as Sunderland manager, due to a clause in his contract which will allow him to walk away from the Black Cats this summer without any compensation being needed.

The Uruguayan has just masterminded a remarkable escape from relegation at the Stadium of Light, leaving his stock sky high and options sure to be open to him as other clubs note his growing managerial reputation.

And Poyet could yet continue his career elsewhere, with Tottenham Hotspur increasingly mooted as a possibility for the former Spurs midfielder.

Should Spurs or anyone else choose to move for Poyet, they could acquire him without a fee.

According to Italian outlet Tutto Mercato, Poyet's contract, which runs until 2015, contains a break clause.

The clause was inserted to allow Sunderland to sack Poyet without any compensation in the event that the Black Cats had been relegated from the Premier League.

However, it also cuts both ways, with Poyet having a window of opportunity to walk away for free because he has kept the club in the English top flight.

The 46-year-old first headed to English shores as a player with Chelsea in 1997, hanging up his boots at Tottenham in 2004.

He entered management in 2009 with Brighton, remaining with the south coast club until 2013.
