Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen has decided to put contract extension talks on hold until after the FA Cup final on Saturday.

The 28-year-old has one more year left on his current contract, but the Gunners are eager to tie their captain down to a longer contract.

Vermaelen has played 14 league matches for his team this season as his team fought to ensure a top four finish and is known to be concerned about operating as a defensive back-up.

However, for now the Belgian international does not want to distract himself with any contract talks as his team desperately fight to ensure silverware.

"It is not important at the moment, my future", Vermaelen was quoted as saying by ITV.

"We are in front of an FA Cup final and my focus is there. My future is not important at the moment.

"We know there has been a lot of talk about not winning a trophy for a long time and so for us it would be important to win the final."

Arsenal last came this close to a trophy in 2011 when they lost the League Cup final 2-1 to Birmingham City.
