Benfica manager Jorge Jesus believes the best team did not win the Europa League, following his side’s loss to Sevilla via penalties in the final last night.

Despite being a goalless affair, it was an entertaining contest at the Juventus Stadium, with both sides creating a clutch of chances throughout the course of the 120 minutes.

However, it was Sevilla who won the closely contested match 4-2 in the penalty shootout and handed Benfica their second successive final defeat in the continental tournament.

But Jesus, who lauded his side’s performance, urged the Eagles not to dwell on the result and instead wants then to focus on their domestic cup final at the weekend.

“It was a great final even though there were no goals. It was an open game”, he told the UEFA’s official site.

“Sevilla started better but as the match progressed we improved and were the better team. We showed our power and had a number of opportunities to score but weren't able to.

“In extra time, the team that played with more belief ended up winning. The best team did not win the Europa League.

“I congratulate my players and there is nothing I can criticise. We leave with our heads held high and there is no point dwelling on this. We have another final on Sunday.”

Benfica, who have won the Primeira Liga title and the League Cup this season, will be looking for their third silverware of the campaign when they take on Rio Ave in the Portuguese Cup final on Sunday.
