Frank de Boer has revealed he was one of four candidates to succeed Kenny Dalglish at Liverpool in the summer of 2012, though he chose to remain with Ajax, and stressed he will only leave the Amsterdam ArenA for a big club.

De Boer led Ajax to a third consecutive Eredivisie title in style this season and has seen his stock continue to rise throughout Europe as a result.

Liverpool were on his tail two years ago and De Boer feels that big clubs will always have a number of options when it comes to choosing a manager.

Asked about a potential move away from Ajax, with Tottenham interested in his services, De Boer told Inside Futbol: "Every big club has many different options for the future.

"For example, two years ago, Liverpool told me I was one of their four candidates.

"I replied to them that it was my intention to remain with Ajax."

De Boer revealed an approach from Tottenham recently, as the White Hart Lane outfit sought to find out about his potential availability, and the Dutchman is sure that he will only quit Ajax for a big club and an equally big challenge.

"I am very happy here in Amsterdam", the former defender said.

"I will move only for a big challenge in a big club, where I have the possibility to plan for the future and test myself."
