Manchester United legend Teddy Sheringham has saluted the atmosphere at Old Trafford during his playing days.

The former striker spent four seasons with the Red Devils between 1997 and 2001 and helped the club to win three Premier League titles, an FA Cup, a Champions League and an Intercontinental Cup apiece.

And the 48-year-old, who will represent England in a charity game against the Rest of the World at Old Trafford on Sunday, is delighted to be returning to the ground.

Sheringham recalled his first European goal for Manchester United at the venue against Juventus, a game his former side won 3-2 despite falling a goal behind early on.

"It’s always fantastic to come back", he was quoted as saying by Manchester United’s official site.

"You forget how big the stadium is and how many people used to watch you as a player. It was always an amazing feeling to have nearly 80,000 fans packed into the stadium and cheering you on.

"Whenever I come back I think of the goals I scored here and all the many great memories I got to experience.

“I'll always remember my first Champions League goal for United against Juventus [in October 1997] on a Wednesday night.

"I’d been told so much about how special European nights were at Old Trafford and even though we went 1-0 down very quickly, we ended up winning 3-2 and all my expectations about big European nights at Old Trafford were there for me and everyone else to see.”

Sheringham was recently roped in by West Ham boss Sam Allardyce as the attacking coach at the Hammers on a part-time basis.
