Jordan Henderson believes England gave their all in his side’s 2-1 loss to Italy in their World Cup opener on Saturday.

In an evenly contested game at the Arena Amazomia, the Italians took a 37th-minute lead through Claudio Marchisio.

Although England pulled level almost immediately when Daniel Sturridge converted a Wayne Rooney cross, the Azzurri had the last laugh as Mario Balotelli scored the winner after the break.

And Henderson, who felt England played well against Italy, was disappointed to return empty-handed from the encounter.

However, the Liverpool player wants the Three Lions to keep believing as he looks forward to his side’s next game against Uruguay on Thursday.

"What we will do is keep confident, keep believing and look forward to the next game", Henderson told his club’s official site.

"I felt as though we gave it everything and we worked really well as a team.

"Going forward, I thought we were brilliant, especially in the first half. I thought we counter-attacked really well and obviously got the goal.

"In the second half, I thought we dominated with the ball, dominated with possession and penetrated with the passing and runs in behind, with a few chances.

"So it was disappointing [to lose] but we gave it everything we had."
