La Liga side Real Sociedad have won the race for Icelandic striker Alfred Finnbogason, reaching an agreement in principle with the player's side Heerenveen.

The striker, who has been linked with clubs including Celtic and Newcastle over the last year, due to his goalscoring exploits in Holland, has given the green light to a contract running until 30th June 2018 with the Basque side.

Finnbogason has already passed a medical with Real Sociedad and the club are preparing for an official presentation to confirm his arrival.

The 25-year-old joined Heerenveen in 2012 from Belgian outfit Lokeren.

He scored 28 goals in his debut season with Heerenveen and then followed that up with a haul of 31 goals in just 34 games in all competitions last term.
