Colombia defender Juan Zuniga has apologised to Neymar after inflicting upon him the challenge which has ruled him out for the remainder of the World Cup.

Zuniga challenged Neymar during the latter stages of Brazil's 2-1 win over Colombia in the World Cup quarter-final.

Neymar went to the ground in pain and a scan post match showed he had broken a vertebra in his spine, something which means he will miss the rest of the tournament.

The news sent Brazil into mourning as they attempt to win a home World Cup without their talisman. But Zuniga claims he meant no harm.

"I deeply regret the sad injury that Neymar suffered during the match between Brazil and Colombia", he was quoted as saying by the BBC.

"Although I feel that these situations are a normal part of the game, there was no intent to injure, malice nor negligence on my part.

"I want to reach out to Neymar, who I admire, respect and consider one of the best players in the world.

"I hope you recover quickly and return to the game soon, so we can all support a sport full of the virtues and qualities that I've tried to follow in my 12 years as a professional player."

FIFA's disciplinary committee are currently investigating the challenge.
