Former Real Madrid defender Fabio Cannavaro has expressed his keenness to take up the role of assistant manager at the Santiago Bernabeu, if he is offered the chance.

The position was left vacant after Zinedine Zidane left his position to take charge of Real Madrid's B team.

Cannavaro, who spent three years at the club, having played 116 matches for the Spanish giants, is excited about the possibility of a return but also added that no approach has been made so far by the club for his services.

"If [Carlo] Ancelotti, who is a great coach, calls me, then I will have to take advantage of it, and of course I would go", Cannavaro told Spanish daily Marca.

"I have read about it in the press but nothing more than that.

"Everyone knows I have a very good relationship with Ancelotti and that I spent three fantastic years in Madrid. But I know nothing more than that."

The 40-year-old has worked as an assistant coach for Dubai-based side Al Ahli, with whom he finished his playing career. A chance to continue with his managerial career is what Cannavaro therefore wants and will be eagerly watching developments on that front.

"I am a qualified coach, I want to be a coach and so we'll see what happens."
