Hamburg are making a move to snap up Feyenoord defender Stefan de Vrij, who has been strongly linked with Manchester United and Lazio.

The northern German club endured a wretched last season and needed a relegation playoff against Greuther Furth to avoid slipping into the 2. Bundesliga.

Hamburg are keen to avoid scrapping for their lives again and according to French broadcaster Eurosport, have set their sights on De Vrij.

The centre-back is currently at the World Cup with the Netherlands, but has been tipped to link up with international boss Louis van Gaal at Manchester United after the tournament.

Indeed, speculation that a deal was already done was so fierce the player's agent was forced to issue a denial.

Lazio are also keen on a man who has just one year left on his contract at Feyenoord.

Hamburg however are preparing a €6m bid to test Feyenoord's resolve, as they aim to take the 22-year-old to Germany for 2014/15.
