Premier League champions Manchester City hold an interest in Germany international defender Benedikt Howedes.

The Citizens are looking to strengthen their defensive options and have been impressed with the 26-year-old's performances at the World Cup.

According to German magazine SportBild, Manchester City are now weighing up making a move to tempt Howedes to the Etihad Stadium this summer.

Howedes currently turns out for Schalke in the Bundesliga and is under contract with the Ruhr giants until 2017, having penned a new deal in March last year.

The defender is club captain, handed the role in 2011, and Schalke will be loathe to lose their leader to Manuel Pellegrini's men.
