Fiorentina have pulled the plug on their attempt to sign Mikel Arteta from Arsenal, feeling the Gunners want too much for the Spaniard.

La Viola had been hoping to snap up the experienced midfielder this summer, however Arteta's agent recently sought to quash speculation his client could leave the Emirates Stadium.

But Fiorentina have backed off for a different reason. Indeed, according to Corriere dello Sport, Arsenal wanted €7m to part with Arteta, a sum the Serie A side believe is too high.

Arteta will be 33 before the end of next season and Fiorentina are unwilling to lay down the figure demanded by Arsenal for the player.

The midfielder joined Arsenal in 2011, following six years at Everton.
