Ajax legend Ronald de Boer has praised new Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal, who he believes is particularly good at promoting youth.

The 62-year-old took charge of the Red Devils earlier today and De Boer is optimistic that his former manager will be able to bring success back to Old Trafford.

The 44-year-old is particularly impressed with Van Gaal's work with youngsters, having always led them in the right direction.

De Boer pointed to the likes of Edwin van der Sar, Clarence Seedorf and Patrick Kluivert, all of whom became stars after being part of Van Gaal's Ajax team.

"For me, he was an amazing coach", De Boer told Manchester United's official site.

"If you look back through the names in that team – Van der Sar, my brother [Frank de Boer], [Marc] Overmars, Kluivert, [Edgar] Davids, Seedorf – you think, 'all those players are stars'.

"But at that time we weren't stars, we were just up-and-coming stars.

"Van Gaal worked well with younger players and he was telling us which direction we should go.

"He did it with so much passion and belief so we followed him. And he was always right."
