Sampdoria sporting director Carlo Osti has confirmed that the club's right-back Gaetano Berardi will join English Championship side Leeds United.

The Serie A side are in the midst of their summer transfer market and Berardi will be a casualty, being shipped out as others arrive.

For Leeds, who are looking to boost their defensive options, the 25-year-old fits the bill.

Speaking on the touchline at Sampdoria's first friendly of pre-season, Osti was quoted as saying by Tutto Mercato: "By the end of the week [Alfred Duncan from Inter] will undergo his medical. He is an excellent midfielder, who did well at Livorno.

"Berardi-Leeds and Beltrame-Modena, we are in the home stretch.

"Berardi will go to Leeds and Beltrame, we'll see about in the next few hours with Modena."

Berardi, a Switzerland international, joined Sampdoria in 2012 from fellow Italian outfit Brescia.

Under contract for only one more year with the Serie A outfit, Berardi, who has one Switzerland cap to his name, made just five appearances in the Italian top flight for Sampdoria last season, spending the majority of the campaign warming the bench.
